About

This website (well, it’s really just a blog) was created as a space to publish quality in-depth, critical reviews of contemporary museums exhibitions in the UK. Whilst there’s plenty of websites, blogs, magazines and newspaper sections which regularly review films, plays, books and tv shows, there seems to be a lack of coverage of museum exhibitions, even though they are arguably of comparable cultural status. Great Exhibitions aims to readdress this balance. (Incidentally, if you write or know of a website reviewing museum exhibitions, do let us know.)

The site is largely written by people who work in or for museums, and we expect that most of our audience have some kind of professional interest too, but hopefully the reviews are relevant to the ‘casual’ exhibition visitor too.

We use the term ‘museum’ loosely, referring also to art galleries, libraries and archives, and any other cultural institutions that opens exhibitions (hey, even the Guardian is in on the act).

The names is a reference to the Great Exhibition, held in London’s Hyde park in 1851, which may or may not have actually been ‘great’, imperialistic or populist, depending on which historian’s article you’re reading. Can contemporary exhibitions match the scale, quality, or ‘greatness’ of the Great Exhibition? We think they can.

That’s probably about all there is to know about this website. Oh, it’s published using Wordpress, and currently uses a modified version of the TechGreen theme, by Ankur Savai.

There, now go read the blog.
